Privacy Policy

• Your Berkeley email — required to sign up, and used to verify you're a student and to contact you about your rentals.
• Your profile — display name, and optionally a photo, a short bio, and your Berkeley neighborhood.
• Listing content — titles, descriptions, prices, photos, pickup location and notes for anything you list.
• Messages — conversations you have with other users through Butz.
• Rental and payment records — dates, amounts, fees, deposits, refunds, cancellations, damage claims, and reviews.

Butz never sees or stores your card number. All payments and refunds are handled by Stripe, our payment processor. We store only Stripe's references to a transaction — things like a session or payment ID and the amounts involved. Stripe's own privacy policy governs the card data you enter on their checkout form.

Application data is stored in our Supabase-hosted Postgres database and file storage. Access is restricted with row-level security so users can generally only read their own data, plus the public parts of listings and profiles.

• Public: your display name, photo, bio, neighborhood, rating, and your active listings.
• Not public: your email address, your rental history, and your payment details.
• Shared with your counterparty: pickup details and messages for a rental you're both part of.

Messages between users are not end-to-end private. Butz admins can read conversations when needed for safety, moderation, or resolving a damage claim or dispute. Please keep that in mind, and please report anything sketchy rather than handling it alone.

• Running rentals: bookings, availability, payments, refunds, and payouts.
• Notifying you about rentals, messages, and claims.
• Safety and moderation: investigating reports, removing listings, suspending accounts.
• Basic aggregate counts, like the site visitor counter. We don't sell your data or run ad tracking.

Rental and payment records are kept as long as we need them for accounting and dispute history. Profile, listing, and message content is kept while your account exists.

Email hi@getbutz.com from your Berkeley address and ask us to delete your account. We'll remove your profile, listings, and messages. We may keep minimal records of completed rentals and refunds where we're required to for financial reasons. Requests are handled by a human, usually within a few days.
